It’s a common classroom sight—students gathered on their carpet spots while the teacher reads aloud to them. This cherished tradition may seem unscientific, but Read Alouds play an important role in research-based literacy instruction. In this edWebinar, Dr. Molly Ness, author of Read Alouds for All Learners: A Comprehensive Plan for Every Subject, Every Day, will share how to apply the Science of Reading to this beloved instructional practice and outline the dangers of dropping the Read Aloud from the classroom’s literacy block.

Classroom educators and curriculum leaders alike are invited to join this session and learn how to structure a Read Aloud routine that can:

  • Build expressive and receptive vocabulary
  • Increase knowledge building
  • Incorporate content area learning
  • Increase comprehension

You’ll walk away with an understanding of the latest research about the linguistic, socioemotional, academic, and even physiological benefits of Read Alouds, plus actionable instructional strategies to bring into the classroom the very next day.

This edWebinar will be of interest to K-5 teachers and school, district, and education technology leaders. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

Molly Ness

About the Presenters

Dr. Molly Ness is a former classroom teacher, a reading researcher, and a teacher educator. She earned a doctorate in reading education at the University of Virginia and spent 16 years as an associate professor at Fordham University. The author of five books, Dr. Ness serves on the Board of Directors for the International Literacy Association and is a New York state chapter founder of the Reading League. Dr. Ness has extensive experience in reading clinics, consulting with school districts, leading professional development, and advising school systems on research-based reading instruction. She is the creator of the End Book Deserts podcast, which brings awareness to the 32 million American children who lack access to books. When she is not reading and writing about reading and writing, Dr. Ness is driving her ice-hockey-obsessed teenage daughter to the rink, learning how to fly fish, or hiking with her poorly behaved Goldendoodle.

Nicole has also served as an account executive with Pearson, Renaissance, and Learning A-Z. While at Pearson, she also served as a Literacy Solutions Specialist and Curriculum Specialist.
