To support all children in becoming proficient readers, it is imperative that the classroom environment and literacy instruction is inclusive, diverse, and equitable so that all students and families feel like they belong. This interactive and engaging edWebinar is designed to equip PreK-3 teachers with the knowledge and practical strategies to create an equitable literacy environment and an inclusive teaching and learning practice that aligns with the Science of Reading.

  • Define diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging and why culturally responsive educational practices are important in literacy
  • Create a diverse, equitable, inclusive, literacy-rich environment where all students and families feel like they belong
  • Apply practical strategies to ensure equitable literacy instruction that embraces diversity and promotes inclusion and belonging that aligns with the Science of Reading

Sam Deffes

About the Presenters

Sam Deffes has been an educator for over 16 years. She began her career at SP Livingston Elementary in Duval County and taught grades K-4 where she led the MTSS team. She also served Duval County as a reading coach and district literacy specialist. Sam is an accomplished professional development facilitator, coach, and content developer. She received her master’s degree from the University of Florida with a focus on Curriculum and Instruction in Reading. Sam lives in Middleburg, FL with her husband and two beautiful children. She is currently a Literacy Advisor for Learning Without Tears.

Yasmin Lynch

Yasmin Lynch is a passionate educator and professional development facilitator. Yasmin earned a master’s in early childhood education from California State University, Northridge and a bachelor’s in political science from University of California, Los Angeles. Yasmin’s passion for education was sparked in her hometown of Los Angeles after serving homeless children and their families at an after-school program, where she saw visible disparities across racial, ethnic, socioeconomic, gender, and neighborhood zip code lines. She began her career as a classroom teacher and later moved into the roles of early interventionist, state policy specialist, and school administrator. In addition, she is experienced in the development and facilitation of professional learning for educators including district and school administrators, mental health professionals, and law enforcement. Yasmin currently serves as a professional learning consultant and a Bilingual National Presenter with Learning Without Tears.
