It’s time to face the facts and recognize the reality that the Science of Reading does address comprehension and instructional practice. This knowledge can and should be used to inform the design and delivery of informed instruction for all students. During this edWebinar, we:
- Discuss what the evidence has revealed about the nature of comprehension and the critical contributors to comprehension
- Explore a blueprint, an instructional framework, that addresses planning for the acquisition of essential language skills and knowledge sources necessary for making meaning of text
- Share examples of instructional routines and activities that support teaching, practicing, and applying critical skills and knowledge based on the demands of the text

About the Presenters
Nancy Hennessy is an experienced teacher, diagnostician, and administrator who currently works as a literacy consultant. While in public schools, she provided leadership for innovative programming for special needs students and led a state-of-the-art professional development program for all teachers. Nancy has designed and delivered keynote addresses and multiple virtual and live professional learning events including workshops, podcasts, and training courses on the Science of Reading and structured literacy. Most recently, reading comprehension has been her focus.
She is the author of the book The Reading Comprehension Blueprint: Helping Students Make Meaning from Text and recently co-authored a companion text, The Reading Comprehension Blueprint Activity Book: A Practice & Planning Guide for Teachers with Julia Salamone. She is the past president of the International Dyslexia Association (IDA). In 2011, Nancy received the International Dyslexia Association’s Margaret Byrd Rawson Lifetime Achievement Award. She was recently honored with the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction’s 2023 Impact Award.
Julia Salamone is a lifelong learner with over 20 years of experience as an educator in both independent and public schools. Her background is in special education and literacy, with credentials that include a master’s degree in special education from Arcadia University. She currently works as an Instructional Specialist at The Haverford School for Boys where she supports upper school students in navigating the complexities of reading and writing in the disciplines. Additionally, she consults and collaborates with the teaching faculty to improve student outcomes.
Julia has also designed and delivered numerous presentations for virtual and live events, including the development of teacher training courses on dyslexia, the science of reading and writing, and structured literacy. Recently, Julia, working alongside literacy expert Nancy Hennessy, has co-authored The Reading Comprehension Blueprint Activity Book: A Practice & Planning Guide for Teachers. Julia’s educational interests include reading comprehension, differentiation, student writing, and teacher empowerment.
