College and Career Ready! Motivate and Empower Struggling Readers in High School
Wednesday, April 11, 2018 @ 3:00 pm - 4:00 pm EDT
Presented by Elizabeth Hauser, Reading Specialist, Grayslake High School District 127, IL; and Katherine Young, Speech Language Pathologist, Grayslake High School District 127, IL
Sponsored by Learning Ally
In high school, struggling adolescent readers sometimes spend three or four times as long as their peers finishing their reading assignments. They often describe feelings of being overwhelmed and defeated, and educators often hear the dreaded, “I hate reading.”
Motivating students who have struggled to read throughout most of their academic career may sound impossible, but with the right tools and a collection of strategies, educators can empower high school students to manage their workload and feel ready to succeed in college and their future careers.
In this edWebinar, high school co-teachers Elizabeth Hauser and Katherine Young demonstrate how to channel motivation to increase literacy skills in struggling adolescent students. They discuss:
- Strategies and reading activities to bring back the joy of reading
- Various technologies and self-directed tools to support students in the classroom
- Student and parent perspectives and emotions surrounding dyslexia and other reading disabilities
- Tips to help students become skilled self-advocates
- Improved social, emotional and academic outcomes in high school students when given effective supports
Elizabeth and Katherine discuss the impact that motivation has on struggling adolescent students and gather ideas to transform these students into lifelong readers. Grade 6-12 general and SPED teachers, reading specialists, speech language pathologists, librarians, guidance counselors, principals, SPED directors, directors of assistive technology, and directors of curriculum are invited to watch this recorded event. Walk away with strategies you can implement in your school tomorrow to empower students to graduate on time prepared and hopeful about their futures!
