About the Presenters
Richard Carranza is the Chief of Strategy and Global Development at IXL Learning, where he leverages more than three decades of experience in education to advance the company’s mission of delivering equitable, high-quality, and personalized learning experiences. A lifelong educator, Richard has served at nearly every level of public education, including as Superintendent of the Houston Independent and San Francisco Unified School Districts, and as Chancellor of the New York City Department of Education, overseeing 1.1 million students across 1,800 schools.
Born and raised in Tucson, Arizona, Richard’s own journey as a Multilingual Learner profoundly shaped his commitment to ensuring all students thrive. He vividly recalls the challenges of entering kindergarten speaking only Spanish, an experience that fuels his dedication to building inclusive systems. Since joining IXL in 2021, he has focused on identifying global opportunities to expand impact and support educators in every learning environment.

Maya Valencia Goodall, Chief Strategy Officer of CORE Learning, is an education entrepreneur with over two decades of experience in bilingual literacy, language acquisition, and edtech. She co-created OL&LA (Online Language & Literacy Academy) at CORE Learning, advancing spoken language as the foundation of literacy instruction for all learners. Addressing gaps in Structured Literacy for language-diverse classrooms, she emphasized integrating spoken language to support Multilingual Learners, English variety speakers, and students with dyslexia. Before CORE, Maya co-founded Lingual Learning, later acquired by Rosetta Stone/Lexia, where she led the development of Lexia English, an award-winning program that uses speech recognition and culturally authentic avatars to teach English through conversation. With master’s degrees in education and applied linguistics, her expertise spans educational theory, learning design, and classroom practice. She is dedicated to centering students’ diverse language backgrounds while also enjoying fashion, travel, and family life.
