James O'Neal

About the Presenter

James O’Neal, Jr. is a dedicated and experienced middle school math teacher with over 15 years of teaching experience. A 2006 graduate of NC State University, where he was a Teaching Fellow and earned his BS in middle school math education, James taught in three Pittsburgh-area districts before returning to his home state of North Carolina. At Piedmont IB Middle School, he became a National Board Certified Teacher, math department chair, and lead of the Math PLC.

James’s commitment to equity and student success led him to found Aftermath, a club for high-achieving Black male students, addressing the underrepresentation in advanced math classes. His work earned him the title of Piedmont Teacher of the Year and finalist recognition for the prestigious Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

He holds an M.Ed. in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in middle school mathematics from UNC-Charlotte and is the founder of Mastery for All, LLC, through which he delivers public speaking and consulting services. James’s passion for educational equity, high expectations, and student growth, combined with his engaging and inspiring speaking style, has made him a sought-after voice in educational communities nationwide.
