Recent surveys of reading experts indicate that fluency is not viewed as an important competency in reading. Based on his own work with young and adolescent readers, professor of literacy education at Kent State University Dr. Tim Rasinski will make the case that reading fluency is indeed a critical and necessary competency for reading at every grade level and that many students who struggle in reading are not sufficiently fluent.

About the Presenter
Dr. Timothy Rasinski is a professor of literacy education at Kent State University, and taught for several years as an elementary and middle school teacher. He has written over 250 articles, books, or programs on reading education. He is author of the seminal book on reading fluency, The Fluent Reader. His interests include reading fluency and word study, and readers who struggle. His research has been cited by the National Reading Panel and has been published in journals such as Reading Research Quarterly and The Reading Teacher. He is the first author of the fluency chapter for the Handbook of Reading Research. Dr. Rasinski served on the Board of Directors of the International Reading Association and was editor of The Reading Teacher; the world’s most widely read journal of literacy education, and also the Journal of Literacy Research. He is a member of the International Reading Hall of Fame.
