Access to online resources including digital content, interactive education apps and websites, videos, experts and peers is no longer a “nice to have” but rather a necessity. Unfortunately, teachers and students are often unable to be sure there will be dependable, robust access outside of school depending on family and community circumstances. In “Closing the Homework Gap: Equity of Access for All Students Outside of School,” SETDA hosted a panel of experts that presented solutions for providing out-of-school access and digital resources to students based off their own experiences.
Teachers have hopes for young people to share their voices, connect, and learn with others in a global, digitally-mediated world. The challenges of digital spaces create opportunities for uncivil, hateful, or overall trivial and unsubstantial dialogue.
As 1:1 and BYOD programs are becoming more mainstream, equity issues beyond access to devices are arising in schools. In this special event presented by CoSN, the presenters explored the various types of digital inequities and how to address them. Marie Bjerede, CoSN’s Project Director for the Leadership for Mobile Learning initiative, began the session by framing the digital equity issue and sharing CoSN’s mobile learning resources.
