For many of the 4.5 million English Language Learners (ELLs) in U.S. elementary and middle school classrooms, learning and understanding the language of mathematics can be a challenge. Supporting ELLs requires a commitment to a shift in practices which involves the entire school and also branches out to the community. Michele Dawson, Senior Director of Instructional Technology in Compton Unified School District, CA; and Kelly Urlacher, Senior Curriculum Designer at DreamBox Learning, had a conversation of essential approaches for supporting these students in “Key Strategies to Making Access and Equity a Reality for ELL Students.”
In this webinar, participants will hear insights from Cheri Sterman, Crayola Education Director; Kelly Schofield, Principal of Hanawalt Elementary School, Des Moines, IA; and Sarah Dougherty, Visual Arts Curriculum Coordinator and Turnaround Arts Director, Des Moines, IA on how to engage adult learners, and will be asked to “make their thinking visible” throughout the conversation as the presenters model a more interactive learning experience.

In this edWebinar, learn strategies to build a data-driven culture that is deeply connected to instruction and learning—and promotes an equitable approach to mathematics.
Data-driven instruction may be the popular catchphrase in education, but in a recent edWebinar, the speakers advocated for data-driven learning. The student, they said, should be at the center of all educational efforts, especially when the goal is to improve outcomes. “Using Student Learning Data to Foster a Growth Culture,” featuring Amy Trees Dodson, M.Ed., Director of Instruction, Cisco Independent School District (CISD), TX; David Woods, Director of Curriculum and Reporting, DreamBox Learning; and Robyn Sturgeon, Professional Learning Consultant, NWEA, focused not just on the idea of collecting data, but on only collecting the data that is actionable. Instead of teaching to the middle, they said, educators and students can use data to attack learning.
