The biggest challenge for many of the students who struggle in becoming proficient readers lies in the automaticity of their word recognition. When students struggle to recognize words automatically, their reading becomes laborious and slow, impeding comprehension. The goal of this edWebinar is to use evidence from the Science of Reading to describe why many students are not sufficiently automatic in recognizing the words in texts and how the texts and tasks of reading can be designed to solve the problem. Viewers leave with an understanding of the following:

  • The significance of automatic word recognition in reading comprehension
  • Factors contributing to insufficient automaticity and why some students struggle
  • Strategies for improving automatic word recognition including evidence-based practices and instructional techniques that help students enhance their overall reading comprehension

Discover the transformative insights of renowned reading researcher Dr. Freddy Hiebert as she shares how to shift students from struggle to success in reading. You do not want to miss this special event illuminating the power of automaticity for every student on their reading journey.

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to teachers, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders of the elementary grades.
