Across the country, professors in Educator Preparation Programs (EPPs) are aligning their courses and fieldwork to the Science of Reading, with the understanding that much of this important instruction was not taught in years past. Eager to equip pre-service educators with the valuable science-based information they’ll need to successfully teach reading in the classroom, university courses are changing—for good reason. This enlightening edWebinar provides a rationale, framework, and resources for doing this important work. The urgency to include the Science of Reading instruction and its impact on English learners in EPPs will also be examined.

Viewers learn:

  • To identify the most essential, widely acknowledged, evidence-based practices that can have the most impact on literacy instruction overall and instruction for the English learner (including how adjustments to these practices can positively impact English learners)
  • A rationale and framework for delineating what expert reading teachers need to know and be able to do, based on the respected Knowledge and Practice Standards
  • How to structure courses that integrate learning and applying the essential elements of reading science; a model syllabus will be shared
  • Where to access support and resources for program alignment, syllabus enhancement, and professional learning; free resources will be shared

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-5 teachers, literacy specialists, reading consultants, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders.
