Mental health is a top-of-mind topic for many these days, especially during the pandemic. For both educators and students, there is an impetus to focus on social and emotional learning (SEL) and to normalize conversations about mental health by talking candidly about how to ride the ups and downs of daily life. As the 2022 Paralympic Winter Games kick off, we are excited to hear from silver-medal Paralympian, Lex Gillette, as he shares his strategies for persevering through such highs and lows.

Lex has embraced the daily pressures that come with being an elite track and field athlete, all while reaching for his goals with the added challenge of being totally blind. Lex is an inspiring speaker, who is known for motivating others far beyond the track with his mantra of “No Need for Sight When You Have a Vision®.” View this edLeader Panel to hear how Lex continues to break records in order to find inspiration to apply to your daily classroom instruction and own personal well-being.

This recorded edLeader Panel is of interest to K-12 and higher education teachers, librarians, counselors, and school and district leaders.

Lex GilletteAbout the Presenter

Lex Gillette, 4x Paralympic Silver Medalist, 14x National Champion, Track and Field – Long Jump, is the most successful completely blind long jumper and triple jumper in the history of U.S. Paralympics. He is a five-time Paralympian (2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) and five-time Paralympic medalist (a silver medal at each Paralympic Games). He is also a three-time World Champion, a 14-time National Champion, and the only totally blind athlete to pass the 22-foot mark in the long jump. Lex lives by his mantra: “No need for sight when you have a vision.” Lex lost his sight at age eight after recurrent retinal detachments, numerous hospital visits, and 10 surgeries. Lex was introduced to the long jump in high school, where he became co-captain of the track and field team. Lex competed in college before earning his first trip to the Paralympic Games at only 19 years old!
