The Science of Reading movement has produced several benefits for both educators and students—and yet it has also come with many misconceptions. These misconceptions about the Science of Reading can be quite problematic and even offset many of the benefits gained from Science of Reading-aligned practices.

In this edWebinar, award-winning researcher, professor, and author Dr. Sharon Vaughn will explore and debunk several of the most common misconceptions around the Science of Reading. This session will examine essential questions such as:

  • Is learning to read a natural process?
  • Should most of reading instruction focus on phonics?
  • Should pictures and cueing systems never be used in reading instruction?
  • Are decodable texts necessary? What about “leveled” readers?
  • Is Science of Reading-aligned instruction appropriate for English learners?

Dr. Vaughn will also discuss the implications for practice and provide practical strategies for improving classroom instruction to strengthen literacy growth for all learners.

All educators with an interest in literacy—especially K-8 classroom teachers, reading coaches, literacy leaders, instructional leaders, special educators, and curriculum directors—are encouraged to attend this edWebinar. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.

This edWebinar is part of the Science of Reading in Action: What’s New and What’s Next series. To explore other sessions in this series, click here.
