Are you looking for new ways to engage and inspire your students’ writing? In the first session for the edWeb.net Creating Multimedia Stories for Learning community, California educational technology specialist Gayle Horsma explored one way to ignite your students’ passion for writing through digital storytelling. With the help of Shutterfly’s free Photo Story App for the iPad, her fifth graders transformed their traditional personal narrative essays into professional quality photo story books. Gayle shared:

  • Strategies for story-mapping a student’s work into a photo story book that includes typing, doodling, pictures and audio
  • An overview of how one fifth grade class transformed a boring personal narrative essay into published books
  • Easy-to-implement approaches for using the free Photo-Story app with nearly any writing assignment to meet Common Core State Standards
By providing the right tools, students will actively engage in critical thinking and creativity through editing and revising their writing. Gayle shared how digital storytelling will help your students develop a keen focus on details and the visual presentation of their text.
