Today’s ELA/Literacy standards require that students develop an increasingly complex set of literacy skills across all domains—reading, writing, listening and speaking—to thrive in a complex global economy. As authors Nonie K. Lesaux, Ph.D. and Emily Phillips Galloway, Ed.D. note, today’s students need to communicate orally and in writing “in increasingly diverse ways and with increasingly diverse audiences to be successful in nearly every aspect of day-to-day life.” How can educators create a rich environment to engage English learners in deep, close reading to develop these critical literacy skills? What are some best practices across all four domains of literacy to accelerate language and literacy development?

In this edWebinar, explore and experience research-informed, classroom-tested approaches to engage English learners in deep, close reading with big ideas and rich content, all anchored in grade-level complex text. Together focus on how to guide English learners to analyze complex text and develop language skills to prepare for independent reading. Also focus on how to engage students throughout the reading process to hold productive academic conversations embedded in shared literacy experiences.

Viewers will walk away with strategies to implement right away to help English learners engage in deep, close reading and academic conversations with complex text. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to elementary through junior high school teachers in New York.
