Today, reading is much more than making sense of ink on paper. The average teen spends significantly more time reading from digital and online sources than traditional print outlets. To comprehend what they “read,” students need to be media literate, understanding the language of sound and image and the distractions that reading online can present.

About the Presenter
Erik Palmer taught English, math, science, and civics over a 20-year career and coached numerous sports as well as debate and forensics. He brings his unique experience to practical, proven methods for educators to improve the speaking and communication skills of ALL students. Erik shares strategies for helping students create worthwhile messages including teaching good thinking (argument, persuasion, and reasoning), for helping students deliver their messages well, and for updating oral communication instruction with digital tools that can be incorporated in every classroom.

Sara Buren serves as Senior Product Marketing Manager for digital ELA programs at HMH. Prior to HMH, Sara traveled the world developing special advertising reports for The New York Times Magazine and Forbes. She holds an international business and urban analysis degree from The Ohio State University.
