World Of Work Virtual Summit

The Future Through World of Work is a free 2-day virtual summit highlighting the creative integration of career development in K-12. The event will center around the transformation of a middle school library into a career center focused on supporting the development of students’ occupational identities. The conference unites workforce, K16 education, non-profit, and government working together to expand new approaches to empower educators to prepare learners for a path to gainful employment. This free summit will be a great learning experience for superintendents, board members, teachers, librarians, foundations, non-profits, parents, career counselors, coaches, government officials, education leaders, and education journalists. Anyone interested in education and/or workforce development is welcome to join!

Brooke ValleKeynote Speaker: Brooke Valle, Chief Strategy & Innovation Officer, San Diego Workforce Partnership

Brooke Valle serves as the San Diego Workforce Partnership’s Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer. In this role, Brooke leads the organization’s strategic planning, national partnerships and advocacy efforts as well as the incubation of innovative financing approaches. Prior to her time at the Partnership, Brooke served as a strategy and operations consulting leader to the federal government where she helped agencies implement innovative approaches to solving some of the toughest challenges in areas such as consular affairs, international law enforcement, narcotics and the intelligence community. Brooke has a master’s degree from The George Washington University in International Relations and an undergraduate degree from Ashland University in Spanish and International Affairs. Brooke is also PMP certified.

A key to success in the workplace is having in place the literacy and employability skills that are essential for success in any work environment. During this session, Saki Dodelson and Susan Gertler, co-founders of Beable and now partners in Beable World of Work, discuss how multi-dimensional technology and methodologies can build the literacy and language skills students need for their careers of choice. They’ll also demonstrate how the system integrates the acceleration of literacy skills while simultaneously providing early and ongoing exposure to careers based on students’ strengths, interests and workplace values.

Indian Prairie School District Presents: Getting Started in the Early Grades with the World of Work™
Tera Nordstrom, second grade teacher at Cowlishaw Elementary School; and Maria Cristina Gianni, first grade teacher in the Indian Prairie Union School District
Hosted by Melanie Brandt, Cajon Valley Union School District World of Work Facilitator

The Indian Prairie School District is committed to college and career readiness for all students. For the past three years the district has invested in supporting teachers integrating career development for all students starting in the early grades. Tera Nordstrom and Maria Cristina Gianni are first and second grade teachers who have advanced the use of World of Work™ resources to support their students. They will share their experiences and the impact of helping students develop a vision of their future possible selves.

Financial Empowerment for Every Child in Every Grade
Chris Collins, World of Work facilitator for the Cajon Valley Union School District
Decisions students make as early as middle school affect their financial futures, as evidenced by the collective $1.7 trillion in student loan debt. At Cajon Valley, we combine Career Development with FSA tools and resources to support and guide students. Join us to learn how teachers unpack these concepts with their students.

Student Readiness for Labor Market Outcomes. New Global Longitudinal Research Including PISA Results
Dr. Anthony Mann, senior policy analyst at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development
Hosted by Ed Hidalgo, Chief Innovation & Engagement Officer, CVUSD

How can we be sure that students are being well prepared for their adult working lives? During this session, Dr. Mann will cover details from a new paper that presents new approaches to determining teenage indicators of adult economic success. Driven by concern over rising youth employment, the presentation draws on national longitudinal studies to identify the career-related attitudes and experiences proven to make a difference. It uses international comparative data to show how the experiences of US teenagers compares to those in other high-income countries.
