English learners (EL) account for more than 4.7 million public school students in the United States. The expected growth of EL students necessitates effective strategies to meet their unique needs. This population of students faces a myriad of obstacles not only to gain English proficiency, but also to excel academically. In addition, schools must recognize the obstacles that exist for EL students beyond the school setting, such as family economic status, insecurity about immigrant status, and high mobility rates due to economic conditions. All of these factors shape the student seated in the classroom.

What can educators and school districts do to ensure that EL students are receiving the best possible opportunities to succeed? Karen HeneryAbout the Presenter
Dr. Karen Henery serves as the director for ESOL/multilingual services in the Little Rock School District in Arkansas and oversees their ESOL program. She works extensively with classroom teachers and building administrators, specifically to deliver high quality instruction for English learners. She also works at the district level through the curriculum and instruction department/district leadership on programming and services for ELs and their families. Additionally, under her leadership, a unique extended-year program specifically designed for ELs was successfully implemented. In its 10th year, the program is offered to elementary and middle school students and focuses on language acquisition.

Dr. Henery holds a doctorate in educational administration. She has provided professional development workshops for K-12 educators nationally, at the state level, and at the district level. She has also served as an adjunct professor through Arkansas Tech University teaching an ESOL graduate level class.
