Through his work with school district leaders and edtech entrepreneurs for nearly 20 years, Doug Roberts saw a need to bridge the gap between these two groups of brilliant people and find ways to help them foster mutual partnerships. He had a big vision for the Institute for Education Innovation when he founded it in 2018, but he could never have dreamed of the impact this organization would ultimately have on school district leaders, education organizations, and the opportunities he and his team have created to develop better solutions that will ultimately support our students. Doug is passionate about every child’s right to a high-quality public education, equity, inclusion, his family, the Yankees, and connecting K-12 leaders to discuss big ideas for the future of learning.

Notable honors include being named the National Association of Secondary School Administrator’s Met-Life Middle School Principal of the Year for Maryland in 2009 and receiving the American Educational Research Association’s Outstanding Dissertation Award in Educational Leadership in 2010. Dr. Joseph was also recognized as the Person of the Year by the Tribune Newspaper in Nashville for two consecutive years. He has authored books such as “The Principal’s Guide to the First 100 Days of the School Year: Creating Instructional Momentum” and “Finding the Joseph Within,” a memoir reflecting on his professional journey and the role of faith and perseverance.

As a turnaround specialist, Dr. Mullen has achieved remarkable results, securing $20 million in federal funding for Providence, Rhode Island, and cutting the failure rate for Secondary Special Education students in half in just one school year. With a focus on inclusive education, she facilitated academic gains and improved IEP fulfillment across 275 schools in Houston ISD. Education has been Dr. Mullen’s lifelong passion, shaped by her upbringing as the child of two educators in Chicago.
Armed with a Ph.D. in Special Education Administration and Leadership, she has also served as an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales University. Beyond her professional contributions, Dr. Mullen is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and actively engages in various community initiatives.
