Doug RobertsAbout the Presenters

Through his work with school district leaders and edtech entrepreneurs for nearly 20 years, Doug Roberts saw a need to bridge the gap between these two groups of brilliant people and find ways to help them foster mutual partnerships. He had a big vision for the Institute for Education Innovation when he founded it in 2018, but he could never have dreamed of the impact this organization would ultimately have on school district leaders, education organizations, and the opportunities he and his team have created to develop better solutions that will ultimately support our students. Doug is passionate about every child’s right to a high-quality public education, equity, inclusion, his family, the Yankees, and connecting K-12 leaders to discuss big ideas for the future of learning.

Dr. Shawn Joseph, an African-American man wearing a blue suit jacket and smiling.Dr. Shawn Joseph is an education leader with a profound commitment to equity and social justice. Throughout his career, he has served as an English teacher, reading specialist, school administrator, central office administrator, and superintendent in Delaware and Tennessee. Currently, he is Co-Director of the AASA/Howard Urban Superintendent Academy and Assistant Professor of Educational Leadership, Administration, and Policy Studies at Howard University.

Notable honors include being named the National Association of Secondary School Administrator’s Met-Life Middle School Principal of the Year for Maryland in 2009 and receiving the American Educational Research Association’s Outstanding Dissertation Award in Educational Leadership in 2010. Dr. Joseph was also recognized as the Person of the Year by the Tribune Newspaper in Nashville for two consecutive years. He has authored books such as “The Principal’s Guide to the First 100 Days of the School Year: Creating Instructional Momentum” and “Finding the Joseph Within,” a memoir reflecting on his professional journey and the role of faith and perseverance.

Dr. Joe MullikinDr. Joe Mullikin is an award-winning educator, consultant, speaker, and leader. He is the incoming superintendent of the Meridian School District in Illinois. He currently serves as the Assistant Superintendent of Meridian School District and principal at Highland Elementary. His first day as superintendent will be July 1, 2024. He served as the Director of Data and Assessment and Continuous Improvement for the Meridian school district and teaches adjunct for Judson University.

Dr. Barbara MullenDr. Barbara Mullen is the superintendent of Rush-Henrietta Central School District in New York. Her impressive track record includes leading successful efforts that accelerate student learning and secure meaningful careers for students. As Assistant Superintendent for the Office of Student Services in Cambridge, Massachusetts, she oversaw a $70 million budget and 520 employees, leaving a lasting impact on the district.

As a turnaround specialist, Dr. Mullen has achieved remarkable results, securing $20 million in federal funding for Providence, Rhode Island, and cutting the failure rate for Secondary Special Education students in half in just one school year. With a focus on inclusive education, she facilitated academic gains and improved IEP fulfillment across 275 schools in Houston ISD. Education has been Dr. Mullen’s lifelong passion, shaped by her upbringing as the child of two educators in Chicago.

Armed with a Ph.D. in Special Education Administration and Leadership, she has also served as an adjunct professor at Johnson & Wales University. Beyond her professional contributions, Dr. Mullen is an active member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority and actively engages in various community initiatives.

Tammy WilliamsTammy Williams is the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Greensburg Community School District in Indiana. She is an accomplished education professional with a wealth of experience and a strong track record of success. As the Director of Curriculum and Instruction at Greensburg Community School Corporation, she has shaped K-12 curriculum across various content areas. Tammy has provided valuable professional development for district initiatives and played a pivotal role in establishing the PLC framework for the district. Additionally, she has been actively involved in coordinating Federal and State grants, serving as the Title IX Coordinator, and piloting the state teacher effectiveness rubric and evaluation program. Before her current role, Tammy served as a Title I Support Specialist at MSD Washington Township, supervising Title I Programs for multiple schools and conducting staff training.
