Designed with the understanding that teachers are deeply committed to fostering an inclusive and positive learning environment for all students, this edWebinar will highlight effective, asset-based strategies to enhance the academic success of multilingual learners. This session will provide strategies for building on multilingual learners’ existing strengths and capabilities and will be useful for K-12 English language development teachers as well as content area teachers.
The presenters will cover:
- The different profiles of multilingual learners and the unique strengths and instructional needs of each
- English language proficiency (ELP) assessment types and standards criteria for reclassification
- Practical, effective strategies to support language development and academic achievement that lead to student success on ELP tests
Core content area teachers will gain tools to differentiate instruction and integrate language support in their subject areas, while English language development teachers will learn focused strategies to enhance language proficiency and prepare students for reclassification. There will be time for questions at the end of the presentation.
About the Presenters
A lifelong educator, Dr. Giselle Carpio-Williams is committed to supporting educational excellence for all students, with a passion for elevating multilingual learners. She began as an educator and advocate for multilingual learners in a dual-language school, followed by roles in coaching and leadership. Dr. Carpio-Williams earned her doctorate in educational leadership with her research emphasis on English language learners. Her current role as Vice President of Multilingual Advocacy and Content at HMH combines her passion for elevating multilingual students with her knowledge of educational trends to inform schools’ selections of programs that support student success.
Dr. Carpio-Williams is the Founder/Co-chair of the Employee Resource Group HMH Unidos, which focuses on the education, professional growth, and celebration of employees who identify as Latinx and/or Hispanic. She is a frequent speaker at educational and diversity conferences; her most recent presentation was Ensuring Educational Equity for Multilinguals at the NABE conference.
Dr. Brian Joseph is the National Director, Innovation and Insights at HMH. He supports school districts in understanding how their data aligns to strategic initiatives that are tied to student learning and provides analysis of key performance indicators. A California native, Dr. Joseph is in his 27th year in education and, prior to joining HMH, served primarily in large urban school districts in Southern California. During his time in public education, he served in a variety of capacities, including a classroom teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director. Dr. Joseph has also served as a dissertation chair and committee member. He has also worked as an adjunct and associate professor in the field of education and humanities. Dr. Joseph is based in Southern California and primarily works with districts in California, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.
