The last 20 years of gold-standard research has proven that the science of reading works. One problem, however, is this body of research focuses primarily on the needs of monolingual English-speaking children.

Learning to read is more complicated in a foreign language the reader is simultaneously learning to speak and understand. In order to read in a new language, students must practice speaking it to develop the background knowledge that monolingual English speakers already have (e.g., monolingual students know approximately 95% of the spoken words they will encounter in reading instruction).

Watch this edWebinar with language expert Maya Goodall to learn how the science of reading applies to emergent bilingual literacy instruction as well as the critical language skills that must be developed simultaneously to help emergent bilinguals read, write, and speak with confidence alongside their monolingual peers.

This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to preK-12 teachers and school and district leaders.
