College and Career Readiness standards expect student collaboration. “Accountable talk” and “Cognitive demand” are buzzwords and priorities, but did you know that student learning can decrease if these strategies are executed incorrectly? Kevin Baird, Chairman at the nonprofit Center for College & Career Readiness, presented how to:
- Review the research literature
- Ask, “What are the best practices and what are the failure points for classroom collaboration?”
- Discuss unintended consequences, the impact on classroom management, and even the potential for illness and absenteeism
- Identify practical and pragmatic actions to ensure that collaboration is effective, safe and successful
You thought you knew what “collaboration” meant in the classroom – prepare for a few surprises!
