The 50th anniversary of NASA’s Apollo missions is a great opportunity to use Moon phenomena and lunar science to address core ideas in K–12 Earth, space, and physical science. From satellite images to computer models and data visualizations, digital media increasingly provides teachers with a range of engaging and innovative science resources and instructional opportunities. In collaboration with NASA, WGBH developed K–12 supplementary digital resources through the Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms project. This robust resource is flexible and adaptable for diverse learners—bringing authentic scientific data beyond the lab to create videos, interactives, games, and digital tools that educate and inspire.
In this edWebinar, we will fly around the Moon, experience a lunar eclipse, and observe the Moon in the sky as we discuss how to actively engage K–12 students in science practices that support their learning of core ideas around Moon phenomena. We will discuss International Observe the Moon Night, a worldwide celebration of lunar and planetary science, celestial observation, and the cultural and personal connections we have with the Moon, and how you can engage your students and community in this global event.
Join NASA planetary geologist Andrea Jones (GSFC/LRO mission) and Dr. Rachel Connolly, WGBH’s Director of STEM Education, to explore the unique value of digital media for connecting students with the Moon (and cosmos). Attendees will:
- Explore a range of lunar and Earth phenomena through innovative digital media formats
- Engage with a NASA scientist about current lunar science topics connected to core ideas and national standards
- Engage with an instructional designer (and past high school teacher!) about curricular integration and instruction recommendations
- Leave with ideas and free resources for implementation inside–and outside–your classroom

About the Presenters
Andrea Jones is a planetary geologist and the public engagement lead of the Solar System Exploration Division at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center. She shares NASA planetary science research and discoveries with audiences around the country and the world. Andrea is the public engagement lead for NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter and director of International Observe the Moon Night, an annual worldwide celebration of lunar and planetary science as well as our personal and cultural connections to the Moon.
Rachel Connolly is the director of STEM education for WGBH and PBS LearningMedia™. Rachel is the principal investigator for the Bringing the Universe to America’s Classrooms project. After teaching high school physics in New York City, Rachel moved into teacher professional development and educational programming at the American Museum of Natural History. Her work with the Hayden Planetarium sparked a love of data visualization that led to graduate work at Teachers College, Columbia University. Her work focuses on designing media-integrated educational experiences that leverage emerging formats of scientific data for innovative instruction.
