As educators, we communicate with our students often, but are we communicating most effectively? How are student stressors altering the way in which our verbal or written words are received by our students? Perhaps even more challenging, as virtual education has grown, how do we ensure our feedback is clear, supportive, and unambiguous without nonverbal clues?
In this edWebinar, the presenters reconsider the language we use when communicating to students, parents, colleagues, and institutions, acknowledge the role of growth mindset in effective communication, and share examples of just how impactful our language can be with our students.
This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 teachers, school and district leaders, and education technology leaders.
About the Presenters
Dr. Lora Grasso has been in education for over 11 years, teaching in public education and virtually at both high school and collegiate levels. Currently the instructional specialist at EdisonLearning, she works with the instructional staff to apply current, evidence-based strategies that make the greatest impact on student learning within the online educational environment. Dr. Grasso is passionate about the importance of “how” we learn informing “what” we learn, believing it is necessary to truly understand how we learn to effectively develop strategies that meet the whole student where they are.
Darla Posney, Ed.D. is the assistant director of instruction and student services at EdisonLearning. Prior to EdisonLearning, Dr. Posney was one of the pioneer educators who lead the charge for virtual/online learning in Pennsylvania, spending 20 years informing instruction, creating policies and procedures, and working closely with teachers in becoming the virtual/online educators of the future. Dr. Posney believes that all individuals respond well to an educational environment that provides trust and where words really do matter. She holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology, a master’s degree in instruction with Principal’s Certification, and a doctoral degree in educational administration and leadership.
