All students can be successful mathematicians if we incorporate their funds of knowledge and prior experiences into our mathematics classrooms. Gutierrez’s research shows how students’ funds of knowledge can be used to help them survive and thrive; and how family and community activities, such as playing games, cooking, and storytelling can be used as cultural and linguistic resources when learning mathematics. How can educators use students’ funds of knowledge in a mathematics classroom? Where do we begin to uncover and tap into the assets that students bring with them to their mathematics classroom? What are some best practices to become more culturally responsive in mathematics?
In this edWebinar, participants explore and experience research-informed, classroom-tested approaches for culturally responsive teaching in mathematics. Together we explore what funds of knowledge are, and how they can be used to inform mathematics instruction. Then we look at best practices for culturally responsive teaching based on NCTM’s Equity and Access strand and current research in the field.
Viewers will walk away with new ideas on how to tap into students’ funds of knowledge through an asset-based lens, and how culture impacts mathematics teaching. This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to kindergarten through junior high school teachers in New York.

About the Presenter
Dr. Horneland has worked in the field of education for over 10 years as an elementary school teacher, preservice teacher supervisor, and teacher educator. She received a Ph.D. from the University of South Florida in curriculum and instruction in elementary education with a cognate in mathematics. Her passion and research experience are in mathematics education and its integration with culturally responsive teaching. Currently, she works at Imagine Learning as a national math expert.
About the Host
Todd Read is the district manager in the New York Metropolitan area for Imagine Learning. Todd builds partnerships with all 32 districts in the NYCDOE, assisting each borough office with their messaging of important initiatives and priorities as well as ensuring the boroughs’ needs are met in large implementations. Todd grew up surrounded by educators with his mother who was a 5th-grade teacher in the NYCDOE and his father who was a college professor. He prides himself on serving the needs of educators and looks forward to his continued work with districts across the city.
