Building academic vocabulary (BAV) has been proven to be an essential element for increasing student achievement in all subject areas. BAV strategies go far beyond the traditional method of copying definitions or writing sentences. In this edWebinar, K–5 teachers can explore practical, research-based approaches for explicitly teaching academic vocabulary and creating meaningful opportunities for students to use new words in context.

Learn strategies that promote student discussion, deeper comprehension, and transfer of vocabulary across reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies. Teachers will leave with ready-to-use strategies they can incorporate into daily instruction to make vocabulary learning more engaging, purposeful, and lasting.

By the end of this edWebinar recording, viewers will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of academic vocabulary development and its impact on student learning and achievement across content areas
  • Explore research-based strategies for explicitly teaching, reinforcing, and applying academic vocabulary in K–5 classrooms
  • Develop practical opportunities for students to interact with and use new vocabulary through discussion, reading, writing, and content-area learning

This recorded edWebinar will be of interest to K–5 educators.
