About the Presenters
Mabel Owens is a USPTO Master Teacher of Invention and Intellectual Property dedicated to educating and exciting teachers about the benefits of invention education. Mabel started her career in the consumer-product industry, serving as the VP of business development for a publicly traded company. While in the business world, Mabel began to reimagine education, determined for schools to better showcase career pathways, transdisciplinary thinking, and real-world applications. Mabel has over a decade of experience in education and has received multiple national awards for her innovative teaching in STEM, art, invention, and entrepreneurship.
Dr. Kathleen Lanman is an Education Program Specialist in the Office of Education at the United States Patent and Trademark Office. Prior to joining the USPTO, Dr. Lanman taught STEM science to middle-grade students and worked with Georgia Tech InVenture Prize to bring professional development directly to teachers in rural parts of the state. Her current role is to bring invention and innovation education to students and teachers nationwide. Dr. Lanman is a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, where she received her bachelor’s degree in education. She later attended The University of Georgia to study educational leadership, where she graduated with a master’s degree in 1998 and her doctorate in 2004. She has been recognized regionally and nationally for her innovative teaching methods.
