Parents and teachers have been concerned about video games for decades. The media continues to write headlines connecting video games to school violence, cyberbullying, and more. However, research has confirmed that video games are safe for kids and can be a positive force for inclusion in learning environments. Professor Christopher Ferguson has published his findings on the effects of video games and media in young people in many peer-reviewed journals and shares his most recent findings.

Christopher, co-author of Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games is Wrong, and Carrie Rogers-Whitehead, author of The 3 Ms of Fearless Digital Parenting: Proven Tools to Help You Raise Smart and Savvy Online Kids, have teamed up in this edWebinar to help debunk myths around gaming. Educators learn how gaming can be a way to teach and encourage healthy and positive digital citizenship. They also look at strategies for including games in the classroom and common roadblocks to their implementation and how these might be overcome.

About the Presenters

Carrie Rogers-Whitehead is the founder of Digital Respons-Ability, a mission-based company that teaches digital citizenship to tens of thousands of parents, students, and educators across the world. Before starting Digital Respons-Ability, Carrie worked for about a decade in public libraries where she regularly put on gaming events.

Carrie regularly writes, speaks, and researches on digital citizenship and education. She is the award-winning author of several academic books including: Digital Citizenship: Teaching Strategies and Practice From the Field (Rowman & Littlefield, 2019); Becoming a Digital Parent: A Practical Guide to Help Families Navigate Technology (Routledge, 2020); and The 3 Ms of Fearless Digital Parenting: Proven Tools to Help You Raise Smart and Savvy Online Kids (Skyhorse Publishing, 2021). Carrie regularly speaks and writes on technology, digital parenting, and gaming. She regularly plays video and board games with her family. With her husband, she writes a blog with game reviews for parents at digital-parenting.com. Carrie is currently playing Kingdom Death: Monster, but that may change any week.

Christopher J. Ferguson

Christopher J. Ferguson is a professor of psychology at Stetson University and licensed psychologist in Florida. He has been researching video game influences on youth for almost two decades and has published hundreds of research studies. He has testified on video game effects multiple times in Washington, D.C. He also has a book for general audiences on video games: Moral Combat: Why the War on Violent Video Games is Wrong. He lives in Orlando with his wife and son.

Joyce WhitbyAbout the Moderator

Joyce Whitby is a lifelong EdTechKnowLedgist who started off as a special ed educator in New York City, and then taught graduate-level EdTech courses at Long Island University. Since then, Joyce has been in the business of educational technology and has held key leadership roles in sales leadership, professional development, and marketing with organizations like Apple Computer, Scientific Learning, and SchoolMessenger. She also has extensive experience working with startup EdTech ventures. In 2017, Joyce and her husband (aka @tomwhitby, co-founder of #edchat) launched their consulting business working with emerging and growing EdTech companies, seeking growth in revenue and market share.
