About the Presenters

Dr. Patricia Dennis is an Instructor and Director of the School Library Media Program at William Paterson University. She earned her doctorate in educational technology leadership from New Jersey City University and is completing research on “School Libraries Leveled Up: Exploring New and Multiple Literacies.” As Lead Researcher for Garden State Esports, she studies student attendance and game-based learning while helping bring innovative esports and play-based approaches into K–12 classrooms. She previously served as a School Library Media Specialist at Forest Street Community School in Orange, New Jersey, where she integrated Minecraft Education, LEGO Fortnite, and Epic Games tools into literacy and STEAM programming. She is extending these same innovative initiatives through her Fulbright grant project in South Africa.

Dr. Pati Ruiz is Director of Learning Technology Research at Digital Promise, where she leads initiatives on AI, emerging technologies, and national leadership for UGain Reading. Prior to joining Digital Promise, Dr. Ruiz spent 16 years as a high school computer science teacher, Spanish teacher, and K-12 administrator. Her research focuses on responsible innovation, digital literacy, and computer science education to advance equitable access. A recognized leader in responsible AI, Dr. Ruiz was a member of the 2024-2026 OECD-EU AI Literacy Framework Expert Group and the 2025-2026 Brookings’ Global Task Force on AI in Education. She was also named a 2022 Brilliant Woman in AI Ethics, a 2023 EdSAFE AI Fellow, and a 2025 ASU+GSV Leading Woman in AI.

Dr. Kelly McNeil is a Senior Learning Experience Designer at Digital Promise, where she designs and facilitates professional learning at the intersection of AI, games, and emerging technologies in education. Her work focuses on helping educators move beyond tool use to designing meaningful, human-centered learning experiences that foster agency, curiosity, and connection. Dr. McNeil specializes in playful professional learning and supports educator communities in exploring how AI can enhance, rather than replace, teaching and creativity. Her research examines how co-designed, immersive learning experiences influence educator beliefs and practices, with a focus on learner variability and inclusive design. She has led national initiatives, facilitated educator networks, and presented at conferences including ISTE, FETC, and SXSW EDU. Dr. McNeil is passionate about elevating educator voice and bridging research and practice in evolving learning ecosystems.
