This edWebinar explores equitable grading practices in a mastery-based learning environment, discussing challenges faced by educators and practical strategies for creating a fair and just grading system. Viewers gain an understanding of how traditional grading practices can perpetuate inequities and will learn about strategies for overcoming common barriers to equitable grading. Viewers walk away with these practical strategies:

  • Using multiple measures to assess learning
  • Using transparent grading criteria
  • Providing timely feedback
  • Involving students in the grading process

Megan LeichAbout the Presenter

Megan Leich is a high school computer science teacher at an independent school in California and the Department Chair of the Computer Science and Engineering department. In her 18+ years as an educator, she has had the opportunity to teach and develop courses in robotics, science, math, and computer science. She is passionate about creating structures that encourage authentic learning and celebrate progress for all learners and is currently leading schoolwide conversations to reexamine grading practices. She is also an Expert Mentor with the Modern Classrooms Project, where she supports teachers in creating flexibly paced, mastery-based lessons. When she isn’t teaching, coaching, or learning, she enjoys being outdoors as much as possible.

Toni Rose DeanonAbout the Moderator

Toni Rose Deanon (she/they) is a former English and ESL educator with 10 years of experience teaching in Atlanta, Baltimore City, and D.C. They were also an instructional coach in Redmond and currently facilitate professional development for educators all over the world. They will forever identify as an educator and a lifetime learner. Toni Rose strives to be the educator that they never had growing up, so they focus on anti-bias and anti-racist work and they want to create a brave space for everyone around them. As a queer Filipinx, they understand just how important it is to be represented, be valued, and belong. She especially loves being a thought partner for and celebrating educators.
