About the Presenters

Patrick Briggs is AVID’s Northeast Area Director. He came to this position after 11 years as the assistant director, then director, of AVID’s Southern Region States. Before that, he spent 15 years as a teacher and administrator in Cypress-Fairbanks ISD in Texas. Patrick believes that any perceived “achievement gaps” are the result of opportunity and expectations gaps that adults must work together to close. His passion lies in helping all learners achieve at high levels so all students are college and career ready upon completion of high school. Patrick believes all students deserve a high-quality education, enabling them to make choices in life that will lead to success in any field of their choosing.

Dr. Sandy Husk joined AVID Center as Chief Executive Officer in January 2014, bringing more than 17 years of experience implementing AVID in the three districts where she served as Superintendent, most recently in Salem-Keizer, Oregon, the second largest district in that state. As CEO, Dr. Husk is responsible for AVID’s vision, which includes furthering its mission of closing opportunity gaps and preparing all students for college and careers. Her leadership at AVID is focused on accelerating the scalability of AVID as a schoolwide and districtwide system and offering best-in-class services, including high-quality in-person and virtual professional learning. AVID has increased its reach by more than one million students during Dr. Husk’s time as CEO. She earned her Ph.D. in administration, curriculum and supervision from the University of Colorado, Denver; her M.A. in guidance and counseling from the University of Colorado, Boulder; and her B.S. in elementary education from the University of Georgia, Athens.

A former second, fourth, and fifth-grade teacher, Sara Peters has worked in a variety of schools in New York, New Jersey and Washington, DC. Committed to quality education for all children, Sara utilizes her M.S. in elementary education and her varied classroom experience as a partner engagement manager for AVID Center. Sara has extensive experience in teaching reading and writing and trained at The Teachers College Reading and Writing Project at Columbia University. As a teacher, Sara was known for her dedication to her students and her ability to motivate them—no matter what it took. In New York City, she implemented a program to help high-achieving fifth graders gain admission to the top college prep schools in the city. She also worked as a team leader in New York City and New Jersey, and trained other teachers. Up to date with findings in educational research, she understands the unique challenges of today’s classrooms—and is eager to see those challenges transformed into successes.
