Close reading is a critical skill for school and for life. By learning to read rich, complex texts in “drafts,” students can unpack layers of meaning and develop an appreciation of how a text conveys its ideas—not just what it says. In this edWebinar, Teddy Redding, Senior ELA Curriculum Developer for Amplify Education, digs deep into the concept of close reading and present techniques educators can use to teach students to “read like writers.” We will:

  • Explore the basics of close reading: what it is, what it isn’t, and why it is such a big deal
  • Present ways of moving in and around texts, using various kinds of text-dependent questions to spur rich discussion and analysis
  • Model and debrief a couple of close readings of short, literary and informational texts
  • Provide additional tips and insights that can be used in the classroom to deeply engage students with close reading

Learn how to teach your students to read like writers! A Q&A segment will follow Teddy’s presentation so you can get your questions answered. Grade 5-12 educators, administrators (ELA curriculum directors), ELA teachers, reading specialists, literacy coaches, and librarians are invited to watch.

Special Invitation: All attendees will get free access to Amplify Close Reading through December 31, 2017.
