In this month’s Emerging Tech webinar on edWeb.net, presenter Michelle Luhtala explored instructional strategies to help teachers teach the Common Core, embed the standards in their own instructional programs,. She also discussed effective strategies to help parents better understand how to help their children meet the standards.
Text Types must go beyond the “Shifts” which suggest more non-fiction, and instead embrace the actual standards which direct student activity within the text. While our “first steps” at increasing a balance of literary and informational text may seem satisfactory, we need to understand the range of text types and how they align within the standards themselves.
Knowing mathematics means understanding what the operations mean, not just memorizing facts.
In the third session in the three part Flipped Learning series on edWeb.net, presenters Marc Seigel and special guest Jerry Overmeyer showed teachers how to use flipped learning techniques to meet Common Core State Standards across-the-curriculum. They shared specific strategies and tips on how they are using flipped learning to meet the new standards for higher order thinking skills.

They shared ways to use the images and graphics in a non-fiction article as entry points for a topic and examples of nonfiction articles that have significant visual components.
