In today’s world where changes in technology are constant, school systems must assure that not only students, but also the entire district’s staff, have the opportunities to participate in ongoing, effective, and impactful technology professional learning opportunities. In this edLeader Panel, three leading superintendents share the strategies their districts implement to assure that their professional learning programs are aligned to improving digital literacy and the technology capacity of their educators, administrators, students, and even parents and families.
When it comes to maximizing technology tools for learning, professional learning for all educators requires a focus not only on specific tools but also on impactful changes in pedagogy that support the sustained effective use of technology tools. Items to be covered in this conversation with the three superintendents include how school districts create professional learning opportunities that focus on specific content areas, provide opportunities for hands-on learning, and directly connect to the daily practice activities of their professional learners.
This edLeader Panel is of particular value to superintendents, K-12 school and district leaders, and aspiring school leaders. Attendees will have the opportunity to submit questions to the panelists during the live broadcast.
About the Presenters
Dr. Deborah Kerr is the superintendent of St. Francis School District in St. Francis, Wisconsin, with over 1,000 students, 100 teachers, and 50% economically disadvantaged. She is in her second year of leading this “diamond of a district,” which passed a referendum during the pandemic and will open up new learning spaces in the fall of 2022. Dr. Kerr has dedicated the last 40 years of her life to the education of all children. She has also been elected to leadership roles in regional, state, and national organizations. She is Past President of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA) and Wisconsin Association of School District Administrators (WASDA). Dr. Kerr is noted for closing achievement gaps, attaining 100% graduation rates, and recruiting diverse teaching, administrative, and school boards. Through her learning experiences with great educators and community partners, she believes that we must collectively work together to promote excellence and equity for all of our students.
Dr. John Malloy arrived to serve San Ramon Valley Unified School District as Superintendent in July 2020 after having served as the director of education (superintendent) at the Toronto District School Board in Toronto, Canada. He has an extensive background in education at all levels and is a fierce advocate for an equitable, accessible, and quality public education.
Under Dr. Malloy’s leadership, SRVUSD is now guided by the board-adopted strategic directions, which are built upon the district’s existing foundation of academic excellence. He also recently led the launch of the new Access to Excellence initiative, which is driven by goals to bring the community together through engagement, advocacy, and fundraising, to ensure the success of our students now and into the future.
Marlon Styles, Jr. is currently the superintendent at Middletown City School District (OH). During his 20-year career, he served as a middle school math teacher, 7-12 principal, and executive director of curriculum and instruction. In 2017, Mr. Styles received the Center for Digital Education Top 30 Digital Trailblazers Award. Under his leadership, Middletown City Schools earned the 2019 ISTE Distinguished District Award for ensuring equitable, accessible, and appropriate technology use for all students. He was recently recognized as the 2020 K-12 Dive Superintendent of the Year. Mr. Styles is passionate in his efforts to close the systemic equity gaps many students in this country face. He is devoted to transforming education and finding ways to integrate technology while creating inclusive learning experiences for all students.
About the Host
Ann McMullan is Project Director for CoSN’s EmpowerED Superintendents Initiative. Ann served as Executive Director for Educational Technology in Klein ISD near Houston, Texas until September 2013, when she and her family moved to Los Angeles, California. For 16 years Ann led the district team that provided professional development on technology and 21st century instructional strategies to 4,000 educators serving 50,000 students. She was co-chair of the Texas Education Technology Advisory Committee which developed the Texas Long Range Plan for Technology.
Today, Ann works as a public speaker, writer, and consultant focused on leadership to meet the needs of today’s students. Ann serves on the edWeb.net Advisory Board, ClassLink’s Senior Advisors Group, and is a founding member of ERDI’s EdLeader Alliance. She also volunteers as a leadership consultant with Executive Service Corps of Southern California, serving non-profit associations. Ann is co-author of Life Lessons in Leadership, available on Amazon.com.
