Students, families, and educators are facing challenges that have stretched their mental health and made learning and teaching more difficult than ever. Social-emotional learning (SEL) can be a powerful way to alleviate some of the immediate stressors while also providing a framework to create better learning conditions for students. But SEL doesn’t just happen! It takes a coordinated effort from district administrators to classroom teachers and families at home.

The leaders of Jordan School District in Utah have been making the social-emotional wellbeing of their students and staff a priority since before the pandemic started, and the initiatives they’ve put in place have supported students and educators through these disrupted two years.

Watch this edWebinar featuring McKinley Withers, Ed.D., Jordan School District Health and Wellness Specialist, and Vicki Robinson, LCSW, Social Worker and Counselor at Oquirrh Elementary School, as they share about their experiences with planning and implementing social-emotional learning at the district and school levels, with strategic insights and explicit examples of practices you can bring into your own communities. In this recorded edWebinar, you learn:

  • Key considerations district and school leaders make when setting SEL goals and evaluating solutions
  • How to generate buy-in and proactively address pushback
  • What districts and schools are doing to address, support, and strengthen the social-emotional wellbeing of students and educators
  • What the future of SEL looks like after a tumultuous two years

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to school and district leaders of the PreK-12 levels.

Vicki RobinsonAbout the Presenters

Vicki Robinson, LCSW says, “I think the teaching of social-emotional learning skills is vital for today’s students. Practicing and using these skills can literally turn a student’s challenging circumstances into steppingstones that lead to greater resilience, empowerment, and a readiness to learn academic content. SEL skills increase a child’s ability to form, recognize and maintain positive relationships.”

Vicki is currently a school social worker for a Title 1 elementary school and loving the opportunity. In past years, she has primarily worked with students and families at risk for the State of Utah, in private counseling, and as a teacher specialist for their school district.

McKinley WithersMcKinley Withers, Ed.D. has had the privilege of working as a teacher, counselor, and administrator. He received a bachelor’s degree in social science teaching from Brigham Young University, a master’s degree in psychology with an emphasis in school counseling from Utah State University, and a doctoral degree in educational leadership and policy from the University of Utah. He currently works as Jordan School District’s Health and Wellness Consultant. If you don’t find him in public schools then you’ll find him with his amazing wife and beautiful children, running (preferably on trails), or trying some other outdoor hobby. Dr. Withers hopes to meet you out in his schools or out in the wild!
