According to the National Education Association (NEA), English language learners (ELLs) are the United States’ fastest-growing student group, currently making up 10% of K-12 students and predicted to grow to 25% by 2025. With over 400 languages spoken by K-12 students nationwide, equipping teachers with the right tools and practices to meet the unique needs of ELLs today is vital for establishing educational equity and accelerating student learning for years to come.
During this edWebinar, viewers take away information on:
- Eliminating training gaps for teachers not formally certified in ESL, ELL, bilingual education, etc.
- Implementing systems to ensure teachers are designing lessons that are aligned to content and language objectives and appropriately challenging to learners of varying language proficiency levels
- The recent successes of Providence Public School District from Jennifer Efflandt, Executive Director of Multilingual Learners
This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 bilingual specialists, instructional coaches, and school and district leaders.
About the Presenters
As an executive director of partner success, Lucy Elizondo brings over 15 years of experience in education. Lucy served at various levels in Houston area school districts. During that time, she taught bilingual students, served as a campus administrator, and most recently, as Senior Manager of Performance Management at Houston ISD, providing leadership in the districtwide appraisal, development, and goal setting for approximately 26,000 employees. In this role, her team was responsible for collaborating with the IT team to completely redesign the non-teacher appraisal system and manage all aspects of implementation, including training, resource development, reporting, and data analysis.
Entering her fifth year as the executive director of multilingual learners for Providence Schools, Jennifer Efflandt oversees the identification and services of all MLL students in the district. Jennifer uses her own experience as a low-income, multilingual learner in Providence and the educational discrepancies she has experienced to fuel her drive to help bring education equity to her community. She believes all students, regardless of race, native language, socioeconomic status, citizenship status, or disability have a fundamental right to receive a high-quality, rigorous education that prepares them to excel in college and their career of choice.
Previously, Jennifer served as the MLL coordinator at Achievement First and has also held roles as an MLL coach, coordinator, and consultant, as well as an early childhood, dual language, and ESL teacher. Jennifer holds a Master of Education from Southern Methodist University and a Bachelor of Arts from Brown University. She also obtained her administrator certification through the Principal Residency Network at the Center for Leadership and Educational Equity. Her studies include visual art, bilingual and bicultural education, teaching English to speakers of other languages, and school leadership.
