View an edWebinar specifically for New York educators!

All students can flourish when given opportunities to think about, read about, talk about, and write about interesting ideas and rich content. After all, as James Britton has said, “Reading and writing float on a sea of talk.” So, how can educators create a classroom environment in which ALL students are given the opportunity – and the motivation – to engage in rich classroom discussions and explorations? What are some best practices for accelerating language development by scaffolding UP, rather than watering down?

In this edWebinar, explore, discuss, and experience research-informed, classroom-tested approaches for stimulating rich classroom discussions. Dive into a set of interesting texts, hooking our learning to an overarching focus question. Then look at best practices for activating prior knowledge or building background, providing differentiated language frames, experiencing different ways to contextualize vocabulary development, engaging in “language detective” work, unpacking meaning, and writing in response to text, all the while engaging in academic discourse around new learning.

Viewers will walk away with fresh new ideas for sparking joy and inspiring students to lean in and engage enthusiastically in rich classroom discussions with their peers. This recorded presentation will be of interest to K-5 teachers, school and district leaders, and instructional coaches in New York.

About the Presenters

Debra Hopkins, Senior Curriculum Consultant at Imagine Learning, began her career as a third-grade classroom teacher in the Dallas ISD where, in her second year as a teacher, Debra was named district-wide ESL “Teacher of the Year”. Because her students, all English learners, demonstrated high levels of success on the state’s high-stakes assessment, she was soon invited to join the district’s cadre of teacher trainers, where she became a mentor for new and aspiring teachers and was invited to deliver workshops at the district, regional, and state level.

After several years as an enthusiastic classroom teacher in Texas and in Barcelona, Spain, Debra was engaged as a curriculum consultant in the world of educational publishing, through which she has been invited to deliver well-received keynotes, interactive workshops, and hands-on trainings in 35+ states and 8 countries, and at national conferences such as NABE, TESOL, and ILA.
