Every day, math teachers face the same challenge: students searching for the quickest path to an answer instead of engaging in the thinking that leads to real understanding. Bigger Than Math Class explores a simple but powerful shift—having students do before we discuss—that transforms the classroom experience and builds lasting mathematical thinking.

In this edWebinar, Nigel Nisbet of MIND Education and Dr. Ted Coe share how this approach sparks creativity, supports deeper reasoning, and offers a lens to consider whether new tools and technologies (including AI) truly change learning. Educators leave with strategies they can use tomorrow, plus a filter to apply to any lesson: If it doesn’t cause students to think, then it doesn’t result in learning. If it doesn’t change how students think, it doesn’t change learning.

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-12 teachers, school leaders, district leaders, and education technology leaders.

Ted Coe

About the Presenters

With over 30 years in mathematics education, Dr. Ted Coe has, at different times, been a teacher, professor, department chair, administrator, non-profit director, and mathematics advocate. He began his career as a high school mathematics teacher before he made the move to full-time college teaching, where he served as the mathematics chair at two community colleges in the Maricopa Community College District. After a brief stint as an Assistant Dean at Grand Canyon University, Dr. Coe became the Director of Mathematics at Achieve, a non-profit focused on assessment, accountability, and standards for college readiness. After that, Dr. Coe joined NWEA, where he served as the Vice President of Academic Advocacy – Mathematics. In 2024, Dr. Coe left NWEA to start Coequal Mathematics, where he provides mathematics education consulting services to help solve the messiest of problems. In addition to serving on the executive committee of the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences, you’ll usually find him spending time supporting states and organizations as they work to improve mathematics teaching and learning.

Nigel Nisbet

Armed with a mathematics degree and early success as a rock musician, Nigel Nisbet moved to the U.S. to teach mathematics, AP Physics, and AP Computer Science at Van Nuys Senior High, where he was a pioneer in integrating technology into the classroom. After a spell in district mathematics leadership at the Los Angeles Unified School District, Nigel joined the nonprofit MIND Education team in the spring of 2010, gave a TEDx talk on The Geometry of Chocolate in 2012, and, as the Vice President of Content Creation, has written and talked extensively about his and MIND’s passion for teaching mathematics the way the brain learns.
