Mastering Multiplication: Using Visual Models to Promote Deep Learning

Tuesday, October 16, 2018 @ 4:00 pm - 5:00 pm EDT

Multiplication Using Visual Models

Presented by Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D., Director of Professional Learning, ORIGO Education
Sponsored by ORIGO Education

Watch the Recording

Deep learning, as described in John Hattie’s Visible Learning™ research, focuses on recognizing relationships among ideas. When students are engaged in deep learning in the mathematics classroom, they are actively seeking to understand the underlying structure of mathematics. This type of thinking is associated with the mathematical practices and process standards found in contemporary state and national standards documents. How do we help students think like this?

Supporting students to use and connect multiple representations of mathematics is one strategy for helping students progress from surface learning to deep learning. Visual models are particularly important as they bridge from concrete models to abstract representations for many learners.

This three-part edWebinar series will explore the use of a variety of representations, including visual models, for developing student understanding of subtraction, multi-digit multiplication, and fraction division. In part two of this series, we share models and representations which develop multiplication with strategies across a range of number types, including whole numbers, decimals, and fractions. Join Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D., Director of Professional Learning at ORIGO Education, to explore a variety of resources to support student understanding and mastery of multiplication.

This edWebinar series will be of particular benefit to elementary math educators. There will be time for questions at the end of each presentation.

This edWebinar is part of the Using Visual Models to Promote Deep Learning
Series:

Mastering Subtraction: Using Visual Models to Promote Deep Learning
Mastering Multiplication: Using Visual Models to Promote Deep Learning
Mastering Fraction Division: Using Visual Models to Promote Deep Learning

Sara Delano MooreAbout the Presenter
Sara Delano Moore, Ph.D. is the director of professional learning at ORIGO Education and a contributing author to Visible Learning for Mathematics. An experienced teacher and nationally recognized speaker, her work emphasizes the power of deep understanding and multiple representations for learning. Sara’s interests include building conceptual understanding of mathematics to support procedural fluency and applications, incorporating engaging literature into mathematics and science instruction, and connecting mathematics to engineering design in meaningful ways. She is a fourth-generation educator with experience teaching mathematics and science to K-8 students as well as experience teaching pre-service and in-service teachers at the university level. Sara earned her B.A. in natural sciences from Johns Hopkins University, her MSt in general linguistics and comparative philology from the University of Oxford, UK, and her Ph.D. in educational psychology from the University of Virginia.
