Assessing young children’s progress and development (that is, ascertaining what they know and how they know it) poses a variety of challenges. While children ages three to eight demonstrate incredible capacity for learning and processing copious amounts of information, the way they demonstrate this knowledge and the accompanying skills is contingent upon a variety of variables, such as their attention span, ability to plan and strategize, self-regulation, and motivation to perform in decontextualized contexts—e.g. standardized or timed tests—which occur outside of and apart from meaningful learning activities and authentic inquiry.
In this edWebinar, Brian Mowry, Ph.D., Manager of Curriculum and Instruction for Frog Street Press, will review a developmentally appropriate framework for assessing young children and present ways to accomplish this arduous task through manageable, ongoing and authentic forms of documentation, including parent interviews and collaboration, work sampling, anecdotal records, digital artifacts, and clinical one-on-one interviews with the child. There will be time to get your questions answered after Dr. Mowry’s presentation. Early childhood educators, administrators, and program evaluators will benefit from attending this edWebinar.
