About the Presenters
Mary Anne Butler is the Superintendent of Stonington Public Schools. Prior to her superintendency, she held assistant superintendent positions in Stonington, Groton, and Windsor. Her career in public education includes six years with the Connecticut State Department of Education in various roles including CAO and over a decade of teaching experience in Somers Public Schools. In 2003, the Bureau of Education and Research hired her as a national presenter on science education, and she’s delivered seminars across the country for over 20 years. Mary Anne served on the NCAA High School Review Committee, is a freelance writer for Penguin Random House, and is a member of the inaugural cohort of Fulbright Leaders for Global Schools (Finland). She holds a B.S. in biology from Saint Mary’s College, Notre Dame, a J.D. from Western New England University School of Law, and a sixth-year degree in educational leadership from CCSU.

David Raleigh brings over 30 years of experience in education, with service at the building, district, and state levels. He currently serves as Superintendent of Jamestown School Department, Rhode Island, following his recent retirement as superintendent of a rural district in Kentucky. Throughout his career, he has held leadership roles including assistant principal, principal, and assistant superintendent, and also served as an Education Recovery Leader with the Kentucky Department of Education. His broad range of experience reflects a deep commitment to strengthening schools, supporting educators, and improving outcomes for students.

Shawn Rubin is the Executive Director of Throughline Learning (formerly Highlander Institute). He is an internationally recognized thought leader with deep expertise in classroom coaching and change management. Shawn co-authored the book Pathways to Personalization: A Framework for School Change, which details Throughline Learning’s community-driven school improvement approach. His teaching career informed his understanding of the challenges that educators and leaders face implementing student-centered pedagogy. He has won several innovation awards for his work in the nonprofit sector, including Aurora Institute’s annual award for Outstanding Individual Contribution to Personalized Learning. He holds a master’s degree in education from Lesley University.
