About the Presenters
Dr. Candace Walkington is the Program Director, Learning Sciences at SMU, specializing in mathematics education. Dr. Walkington received the 2019 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) from the U.S. Department of Education. She has received over $11 million worth of grants from the National Science Foundation, the U.S. Department of Education, and the U.S. Department of Defense. Her research examines how abstract mathematical ideas can connect to students’ everyday experiences to make mathematical ideas more understandable. She conducts research on “personalizing” mathematics instruction to students’ interests in areas such as sports, music, shopping, and video games, and their intended careers. She is also conducting research that connects math learning to art, architecture, and nature by having children and families take guided “math walks,” for which she is creating a mobile place-based game. She also examines ways to connect mathematical practices with physical motions, using augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR), and motion-capture technologies.

Colleen Clatworthy is an Admissions Outreach Advisor who helps students enroll in SMU’s MS in Learning Sciences program. Go Mustangs!
