Putting Manipulatives to Work: Developing Geometric Measurement in Grades 3-4 with Color Tiles & AngLegs
>>> VIEW THE WEBINAR RECORDING
Schools and teachers often find manipulatives gathering dust in the back of a closet. Our Summer 2015 webinar series will be an opportunity to explore new uses for familiar manipulatives, as well as a look at new tools to add to your toolkit. In this edWeb.net webinar presented by the Building Understanding in Mathematics community, Dr. Sara Delano Moore shared manipulatives to use to develop geometric measurement skills, particularly focusing on area and perimeter and angle measure in intermediate grades. Sara also explored developing conceptual foundations for critical geometric measurement skills.

I watched the recording and was fascinated by the ideas that people were putting in the chat room!
I do think that going back to basics is a great thing! I use fingers because I find them easier than a calculator, so why shouldn’t my kids? I love that we are explaining terms and using terms that we would only have used in Uni! I loved all those stories we had in Uni and I tell my kids. I have to say that Khan Academy does too! The Messy thinking part of the webinar struck home with me. My kids, tutees mostly, have difficulty just free-handing models. I have to show/model them on the smart board or ipad that messy and quick is usually all the mind needs to make sense!
Anglegs are great and if you are on a short string budget like me colour makes a whole load of sense when explaining!
Thank you Sara Delano Moore PhD for this session and all the others who took part.
I missed the live presentation because I have a vacation brain and didn’t pay attention to the day!
