As every early childhood professional knows, children learn through play! Research also highlights how play is an important part of children’s development of the skills and dispositions that are essential to learning and classroom engagement. One such type of play activity that can support a child’s development and learning is music play.

While most of us think of music class as teacher-led songs, a developmentally appropriate music experience fosters child-initiated music play and provides the opportunity for individual children to focus on their own musical ideas – at all ages. Before young children can play music (i.e., perform), they must play with music!

Regardless of their music background, webinar viewers will discover the ways in which exposing children to developmentally appropriate, non performance-oriented music activities supports a child’s innate tendency to play while also benefiting children’s overall development. They will learn ways to create a child-centered, playful music environment that encourages and values children’s own ways of making music, allows each child to take ownership of his or her music learning, and affords each teacher an opportunity to maximize the learning benefits of play. The presenter also showed some great songs that early childhood educators can use in their classes to provide children with a rich musical playground.

Join the Arts & Music in Early Learning community to participate in online discussions with peers, for invitations to upcoming webinars, to view past webinar recordings, to take a quiz and receive a CE certificate for a past webinar, and for access to more resources.

music togetherAt Music Together, we understand the importance of music in early childhood—from birth, in fact. Because the truth is, most people are born with enough music aptitude to play in a symphony orchestra when they are adults, if they choose. But first we must learn how to “speak music”—to take the musical instrument we all have, ourselves, developing that musical capacity from a very young age. The sounds we make, our movements, our rhythms—these are the building blocks of music and of early childhood learning. And that’s what Music Together is all about.
