Schools often overlook the greatest vehicle for positively transforming school culture: student voice. “If my teachers and school really knew me, they would know . . .”

Watch this edWebinar to learn how gathering and listening to students better prepares schools to engage students, strengthen relationships, and develop a culture of hope. Viewers learn the value of five processes for gathering student voice:

  • Conversation circles
  • Off-track interviews
  • Student voice needs assessment
  • Legacy and graduation stories
  • Focused conversations on student-identified barriers

Viewers also hear how gathering student voice yields valuable qualitative and quantitative content capable of increasing the effectiveness of schools.

This recorded edWebinar is of interest to K-12 educators, especially counselors, social workers, graduation coaches, and school and district leaders.

Leigh ColburnAbout the Presenters

Leigh Colburn is a career educator, community leader, and educational consultant. She began her career in elementary school—teaching in all K–5 grades before moving into elementary administration and becoming a principal. Leigh transitioned to high school administration and proudly served as the principal of Marietta High School for ten years until founding the Graduate Marietta Student Success Center in 2015. Under her leadership, the Graduate Marietta Student Success Center received the 2016 Charter System Innovator of the Year Award for the state of Georgia.

As an educator, Leigh and the schools she led were recognized for innovation and positive gains related to academic achievement, decreasing achievement gaps, improved attendance and discipline, and rising graduation rates. Leigh’s experience in both elementary and high school positions her to guide school leaders to take a whole child approach customized to the barriers and assets of each school and community. She assists districts in establishing dynamic partnerships between their schools and their elected representatives, public safety departments, local and state service agencies, and community organizations to improve the quality of life for their students and families. Leigh earned degrees from Kennesaw State University, the University of Mississippi, and the University of Alabama.

Linda BeggsLinda Beggs is a co-founder of The Centergy Project, a Georgia-based education consultancy working with school districts wanting to offer embedded wraparound services. Along with her business partner, Leigh Colburn, Linda co-authored The Wraparound Guide, a how-to handbook for helping students overcome barriers to wellness and learning.

Linda is certified in the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the EQ-i. She traveled nationwide for over ten years while working as a consultant with Franklin Covey and Pritchett & Associates, holding a variety of certifications in their content areas such as The Speed of Trust, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People, and Business as Unusual.
