Doug Scott

About the Presenters

Doug Scott, an engineering and design teacher located in Massachusetts, has had a great deal of experience developing materials for the Lemelson-MIT Invention Education program, STEMisED for a USPTO education engagement contract, and the NewsHour Invention Education lesson series. Doug is a featured invention educator in a USPTO Journeys of Innovation story and was awarded the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching. Doug and his students were awarded a patent for a “Multi-component robot for below ice search and rescue.”

Joyce Ward

Joyce Ward is Director of Education, USPTO’s Office of Public Engagement, expanding outreach to K-12 educators and students, integrating invention, innovation, entrepreneurship, and STEM education. Her office fosters intellectual property creation and protection. Joyce led initiatives like the Science of Innovation series, National Summer Teacher Institute on Innovation, STEM, and Intellectual Property (NSTI), Master Teacher of Invention and Intellectual Property (MTIP) program, Girl Scouts intellectual property patch, and the USPTO Inventor Trading Card series. Previously, she served as Director of Program Support and Intellectual Property at the National Inventors Hall of Fame and as a trademark examining attorney and education specialist at the USPTO. Joyce holds a law degree from Georgetown University Law Center and an undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
