As the job market expands, so does the need to ensure students grasp STEM concepts. The STEM Careers Coalition (SCC)—the first-of-its-kind national STEM initiative powered by corporate leaders and anchored in schools by Discovery Education—strives to help educators meet the changing needs of students with a focus on tackling the lack of diversity and unequal access to opportunity in the STEM workforce pipeline. Through direct investment in schools and development of a diverse portfolio of no-cost digital resources, the Coalition is helping to bridge the gap between industry and education in unprecedented ways.

Marla WilsonAbout the Presenters

Marla Wilson is the executive director of the STEM Careers Coalition from Discovery Education. In this role, Marla unites the business community to grow the STEM pipeline and prepare 10 million students for the future of work with no-cost, standards-aligned, digital resources. Previously, Marla worked as the senior director of the “Go Red for Women” campaign for the American Heart Association and Executive Director for the Miami March of Dimes. Originally from Las Vegas, NV, she holds a Bachelor of Communications from the University of Central Oklahoma where she studied broadcast and print journalism. Today, she strives to make a difference in the lives of children and families globally. Whether consulting with philanthropists on how or being the driving force of change through 1 Percent Circle, the exclusive consulting group she founded to match celebrities with mission-related initiatives, Marla commits herself to the advancement of those in need.

 

Jackie Kavege

Jackie Kavege’s 15-year career has included developing integrated communications strategies for a wide variety of companies, including a number of Fortune 500 companies and non-profits. In her current role as Director of CEP Program Activation, Jackie applies her strategic marketing experience to ensure that Discovery Education resources reach the educators, counselors, parents and students who can most benefit from the comprehensive selection of digital learning tools and instructional supports available through Discovery Education’s social impact efforts. Jackie resides in Charlotte, NC with her husband and children.
