Executive functions are some of the most important mental skills we need in order to get things done throughout our lives. Executive function skills help us control our impulses, filter distractions, plan and prioritize tasks, and remember instructions. We are not born with these skills, but every child has the potential to develop them, beginning in early childhood! In this edWebinar, we explore the many ways in which developmentally appropriate, participatory, and enjoyable music and movement activities can naturally support young children’s development of important self-regulation and executive function skills, including attention control, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and inhibitory control.
Viewers leave with a deeper understanding of the importance of executive functions to school and life success and how and why developmentally appropriate music and movement activities support children’s executive function and self-regulation skills in the early years. Educators, regardless of their own music skills or experience, gain new, engaging, and developmentally appropriate musical tools that they can use in their work with young children to support their self-regulation and executive function skills. Recent research is also explored. Come ready to learn and have some fun making music!
This recorded edWebinar is of interest to PreK-3 teachers, school leaders, and district leaders.

Music Together® is the leader in early childhood music education. Our curriculum and enrichment resources have decades of research behind them, in both music education and child development. As the first organization to hold music classes for the youngest learners, and the first to include parents, we have been pioneers in early childhood music education since day one. First offered in 1987, our music classes, curricula, and enrichment resources for children birth through kindergarten help little ones develop their innate musicality and much, much more—when Music Together is offered by a school, music becomes a powerful learning tool. From private and public preschools, to pre-kindergarten programs, Head Start, childcare centers, and in-home daycares, our award-winning music and developmentally appropriate activities have been found to raise the overall quality of children’s early learning.
