We all know that children love music! While singing and dancing to music is enjoyable at any age, making music together with young children also helps develop a host of important skills, including language and literacy skills. During this interactive edWebinar, we explore how and why the content and process of developmentally appropriate music activities naturally support young children’s language and literacy development. Viewers, regardless of their music background, will gain a deeper understanding of how to use music to holistically support important areas of language and literacy development, including print awareness and motivation, vocabulary development, narrative skills, letter knowledge, phonological awareness, and active listening skills.
Through presenter-led music activities, viewers come to better understand the connections between language learning and music making by analyzing aspects of language learning inherent in participatory music activity. Dr. Lili M. Levinowitz, Director of Research at Music Together Worldwide and Professor Emerita of Music Education at Rowan University, also reviews recent research on this topic and demonstrate teaching practices grounded in the developmental benefits of active learning, play, and relationships during the early childhood years. Special attention is also paid toward exploring how music activity can support the language-learning needs of dual language learners.

About the Presenter
Lili M. Levinowitz, Ph.D. is Director of Research at Music Together Worldwide and Professor Emerita of Music Education at Rowan University. She is the co-author of Music Together, the first early childhood music education program to start at birth and to focus on the involvement of parents and caregivers in children’s music learning. Music Together classes are now found in over 3,000 communities across 40 countries. Dr. Levinowitz has trained thousands of Music Together teachers and has been actively involved in teaching very young children and graduate students for decades. As an international leader on early childhood music education, her articles appear frequently in journals and online, and she is a sought-after presenter on early childhood music education. She is the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association’s (ECMMA) 2024 Hall of Honor Inductee, recognizing her lifetime of achievement with worldwide influence on music and movement education. She has a B.M. from Westminster Choir College and an M.M. and Ph.D. from Temple University.

Lisa Chouteau is the Music in Early Learning edWebinar series host. She is the Senior Video Producer and Manager of Video Production at Music Together Worldwide and holds a B.S. in business administration, training, and development from The College of New Jersey.
