About the Presenters
Dr. Sara Birkhead is the PreK-6 Mathematics Coordinator for Manassas City Public Schools, where she oversees mathematics curricula, assessment, and professional learning across seven schools. Having taught grades three through eight and several college courses in mathematics content and pedagogy, Dr. Birkhead remains passionate about working with students in the classroom, however, her primary focus now lies in supporting teachers’ professional growth. She holds a doctoral degree in mathematics education leadership, with her research centered on professional development that empowers mathematics teachers to implement student-centered instruction. Inspired by the transformative impact of high-quality professional development on her own teaching, Dr. Birkhead is dedicated to helping all teachers recognize the difference student-centered mathematics instruction can make for every student.
Daniel Tracy began his career in education as a high school math teacher before becoming an instructional designer and learning advisor. At MIND Education, Daniel trains teachers as well as MIND staff. Drawing on his experiences as a teacher, coder, and trainer, he reveals that the way math is taught in classrooms rarely reflects real-world math experiences—which often do not even involve numbers and symbols. Daniel speaks across the country to illuminate the power and necessity of neuroscience-based, interactive math software that is designed to teach all students how math really works. Daniel earned his bachelor’s in math and his master’s in math education from Northern Kentucky University.
